In 1940 a dam was built on the river Pitangui, originating an artificial lake, known as Alagados or ‘a land covered by water’. The dam is responsible for the water supply of the city of Ponta Grossa. Alagados is located 20 km from downtown. Besides its hydric importance, Alagados is an environmental preservation and leisure area where visitors can get in touch with nature.

At Alagados Dam visitors can fish, swim, practice canoeing and wind-surfing. The Yatch Clube of Ponta Grossa is also located in the area. The road that gives access to the Alagados is amidst rural areas with beautiful sightseeing.
