The history of Santa Bárbara Chapel is linked to the presence of Jesuits priests in the region and because the area was a path to cattle drivers.

In 1727 the Sesmaria of Conceição – or Pitangui – was donated to the Society of Jesus, where the religious people established the Fazenda Pitangui (Pitangui Farm). In 1729 a small wooden oratory building was erected in the place.

With the inauguration of the Path of Cattle Drivers in 1731, the Jesuit priests dedicated the chapel to Saint Barbara. The Chapel was the first to be built in the city. In the year 2000, it was protected by COMPAC and completely restored.
