In 1823, after the city of Ponta Grossa became Freguesia, it was necessary to build a chapel because the altar in Casa das Telhas was not appropriate to serve the population of Freguesia anymore. The highest place in the city was chosen as the place to build a simple chapel. The chapel was built to shelter the Sant’Ana’s image. By 1863, the church, which did not have any tower nor side corridors, was enlarged.
In 1906 a new church was built on the same high hill where the Sant’Ana chapel was located. The new building was designed by the Italian architect, Nicolau Ferigoti. The different style of the building and the fact that it could be seen from different parts of the city called the attention of the people. In 1978 the Cathedral was demolished and a new one was built at the same place. The new building has a modern style.
